Significant damage was reported on Sunday as potent storms swept through the central US, unleashing destructive winds, large hail, and several tornadoes. The weather pattern, which threatened to bring a derecho with wind gusts surpassing 100 mph and baseball-sized hail, was similar to the storm that hit Texas and Louisiana earlier in the week.

According to the National Weather Service, there were confirmed reports of at least 13 tornadoes across Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma on Sunday, including a particularly deadly and life-threatening twister that carved through Oklahoma City.

In Kansas, some of the most intense wind gusts of the day were recorded, with Salina Regional Airport logging winds at 100 mph. also experienced gusts exceeding 80 mph. The National Weather Service reported baseball-sized hail in Ellis, Kansas, and Moorewood, Oklahoma, with other Kansas locations reporting hail exceeding 2.5 inches in diameter.

The National Weather Service has indicated that the central U.S. will continue to face a heightened risk of severe weather and heavy rainfall into early this week.

Over 16 million people from Colorado to Illinois were preparing for a range of hazardous weather conditions on Monday, including significant hail, strong winds, and potential tornadoes, as reported by the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. The risk of severe thunderstorms is expected to continue into Tuesday in parts of the Mississippi Valley. While damaging winds are the main threat, the possibility of large hail and tornadoes remains.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 3 out of 5 risk of severe weather for Tuesday, affecting over 9.5 million people. This looming threat places people in seven states, from the Plains to the Midwest, on high alert for storms that could produce damaging winds, hail, and potential tornadoes.
