Southern California is currently, experiencing a severe weather crisis, marked by floods, storms, and heavy rainfall disrupting infrastructure ahead of the holiday season. An atmospheric river has brought an unprecedented deluge to the region, with some areas witnessing what could be termed a 1-in-500-year rainfall event for the city.

In Ventura County, a remarkable volume of rain, exceeding 2.5 inches, poured down in a few hours early on Thursday morning, particularly affecting the city of Oxnard. This intense rainfall led to widespread flooding, impacting over 60 homes in the area. The county’s fire department was overwhelmed, receiving 275 emergency calls within five hours.

The situation in Santa Barbara was also dire, with essential highway ramps to Highway 101 shut down due to the floods, rock and mudslides, and debris flows. The National Weather Service has extended flood watches across various regions including Los Angeles, San Diego, and Palm Springs, anticipating further rainfall that could exacerbate the situation.

The relentless torrential rainfall will add another 5 to 10 inches, especially on south-facing foothills and coastal slopes. While Southern California grapples with these conditions, Northeast US is also battling severe weather, highlighting a week of extreme climatic events across the nation.
