Midwest and Eastern US Braces for Flash Floods as Severe Storms Sweep Central and Eastern US
After a wave of severe storms swept through the Northeast, another round of intense thunderstorms is forecast to impact large portions of the Central, Midwest, and Eastern US this week. These storms are expected to bring torrential rainfall, significantly increasing the risk of flash flooding for tens of millions of people.
On Wednesday, the threat includes damaging tornadoes, hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and heavy downpours. Roughly 71 million residents from central Michigan to northern Texas are at risk. Affected cities include Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, Shreveport, St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville. The mid-Mississippi Valley region is expected to face the highest potential for severe weather.
The storm threat will persist through the week, with 27 million people in the Central Plains at risk on Thursday. That number will slightly decrease to 26 million on Friday and 19 million on Saturday as the system weakens and shifts.
