Cyclone Gabrielle Lashes New Zealand with Floods and Landslides: Post Event Footprints Available
Cyclone Gabrielle has caused massive flooding in parts of North Island. The ferocious storm
has cut off entire towns, washed away farms, bridges, and livestock, and inundated homes, stranding people on
rooftops. Around a third of New Zealand’s population live in affected areas and 250,000 people are without power. On
Wednesday, the storm began to weaken and move away from the country.
A significant portion of the northern region of North Island had over 30 state highway
closures as well as the disruption of air, marine, and train services. On Tuesday, the Regional hub Napier Airport,
which is located further south, received 175 millimeters of rain in 24 hours. This is three times more rain than the
February normal.
The storm’s devastation has been most severe in coastal settlements on the extreme north and
east coast of the North Island. The worst-hit regions are Hawke’s Bay, Coromandel,
Whangarei, and Northland. The government has declared a state of emergency for the North Island; the third in the
history of New Zealand.

February 13th, 2023 | Cyclone Gabrielle lashes North Island and Approaches Auckland:
Forecast Footprints Available
Cyclone Gabrielle has been downgraded to a sub-tropical low-pressure system and is approaching the North Island with
wind gusts of 87 kph. The storm has already destroyed roofs, toppled trees, and left more than 46,000 properties without
power. Additionally, several regions are reported to have inconsistent mobile phone service.
On Saturday night, Cyclone Gabrielle passed close to Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea,
however, its most devastating gusts missed the island. Whangarei, a city located north of Auckland,
received 4 inches of rain over 12 hours. Currently, Gabrielle
is located 125 miles northeast of Auckland and will move closer in the next 24 hours. Additional severe weather is
predicted for Auckland later today into Tuesday morning.
Local government and educational institutions have been shut down in Auckland and the upper
North Island. Meanwhile, more than 509 flights were canceled. A state of emergency has
been declared for Auckland and nearby regions.

Cyclone Gabrielle has developed into a Category 3 storm with winds of up to 140kph. It has
the potential to cause up to 300 mm of rain and bring winds of up to 150
kph. New Zealand’s North Island and areas of South Island are expected to experience hazardous weather
conditions.
The cyclone is currently moving towards Norfolk Island, Australia, and will
make landfall this weekend. Both Norfolk Island and areas of New Zealand including Auckland, are bracing for heavy
rains and gales. The storm is expected to hit New Zealand in the first part of next week.
Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to be one of the worst storms to hit New Zealand this century.
This new storm warning comes hard on the heels of devastating floods that have already caused millions
of dollars of damage in Auckland.

February 9, 2023 | Cyclone Gabrielle Predicted to Hit New Zealand: Forecast Footprints Available
Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to make landfall between Saturday and Tuesday in Auckland, New
Zealand’s largest city. The cyclone is predicted to intensify into a Category 3 cyclone with winds between 119 and
157 kph. This storm is predicted to be the most hazardous to hit the country in a century.
Currently, cyclone Gabrielle is located in the Coral Sea and is
moving towards the south of Aotearoa, New Zealand. It is anticipated to smash into the North Island on Monday. It
will cause severe gales, large waves, and storm surges in Auckland and the upper North Island.
