Massive flooding in Auckland was brought on by Friday’s record-breaking rainfall that continued for the next three days. This has caused widespread flooding, power and water outages, and multiple landslides on the North Island.
According to Reuters, major insurers like IAG and Suncorp have already received over 9000 claims. Auckland remains under a state of emergency as there’s potential for more adverse weather.
According to the MetService in New Zealand, Auckland is having its wettest month since records began. For comparison, Auckland’s wettest January was in 1986, with 206mm, whereas in January 2023, an extraordinary 320mm of rain at Auckland Airport was recorded.
