Flood alerts have been issued from north of the San Francisco Bay Area down to coastal sections of Los Angeles County, with authorities responding to multiple reports of rock and mudslides in Malibu and the Santa Cruz Mountains.
By Thursday afternoon, flood watches covered 32 million residents across California as the storm delivered relentless rainfall. Communities in California devastated by last month’s deadly wildfires are now under evacuation warnings as an atmospheric river storm moves in, bringing the risk of flooding and debris flows. Authorities have deployed more than 7,500 feet of concrete barriers and over 6,500 sandbags in regions affected by the Palisades Fire to help prevent debris flows.
According to the Weather Prediction Center (WPC), parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including areas scorched by the Palisades and Eaton Fires, face a Level 3 out of 4 risk for flooding rainfall on Thursday. Additionally, over 36 million residents across California remain under a Level 2 flood risk, impacting major cities such as San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Diego.

Feb 06 | California Faces Flooding, Mudslides, and Heavy Snow as Another Storm Approaches
A new storm is approaching on the heels of an atmospheric river that just impacted California. This storm system fueled by an atmospheric river is expected to arrive on Thursday, bringing up to an inch of additional rainfall and renewing concerns of flooding and landslides. The most intense downpours are projected between midday Thursday and early Friday.
Meanwhile, the Sierra Nevada has been buried under significant snowfall, with some areas receiving over a foot—Donner Peak alone recorded 32 inches. Winter weather alerts remain in effect for the mountain range through Friday, with forecasts predicting another one to three feet of snowfall before the storm subsides.

Feb 05 | Atmospheric River Slams California with Floods, Mudslides, Intense Rain & Snow
An atmospheric river impacts California, bringing significant rainfall and snowfall across the state. Approximately 13 million residents are under flood watch, with heavy precipitation expected to cause flooding, mudslides, and debris flows through Wednesday.
In Northern California, areas north of the San Francisco Bay have already recorded over 3 inches of rain, with forecasts predicting an additional 3 to 8 inches. Not only that, but damaging wind gusts exceeding 50 mph are also impacting the area.
Southern California, which experienced multiple wildfires last month due to an exceptionally dry winter, is expected to receive rainfall from Wednesday through Friday.
The National Weather Service has warned of a flood risk for Northern California, while heavy mountain snow is expected in central California through Wednesday. Parts of the West, from Northern California to Washington and Wyoming, have experienced up to 40 inches of snow. Forecasts indicate that some areas from California to Montana could receive an additional 2 to 5 feet of snow through Wednesday.
