Wildfires Sweep Across Oklahoma and Texas, Destroying Hundreds of Homes

More than 40 million Americans are under alert for fire weather conditions over the next few days. Oklahoma fire that started on Friday damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes around the state during a severe weather outbreak. Fueled by dry conditions and high winds, the wildfires have scorched approximately 170,000 acres and destroyed more than 400 homes and structures, forcing widespread evacuations.

A red flag warning is in effect through Thursday for parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois, signalling a high fire risk. In Texas, a wildfire near Borger in Hutchinson County rapidly grew to 350 acres on Tuesday evening, triggering evacuation orders. Meanwhile, another fire in northern Dallam County expanded to 15,000 acres but was 50% contained by Tuesday night, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.
