Powerful Derecho Causes Havoc in Kansas and Now Escalates Severe Weather Risk to Chicago

Destructive hail, strong winds, and a few tornadoes may hit communities across parts of the Midwest on Tuesday as a relentless storm system continues its path through the U.S. this week. In the central US, cleanup is already in progress after a powerful derecho swept through Kansas, bringing 100 mph winds and baseball-sized hail, causing extensive damage and leading to power outages for tens of thousands.

Post investigation, on Monday, officials confirmed one tornado in Kansas that affected the community of Auburn in Osage County. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported this tornado as an EF-0, with wind speeds estimated at 85 mph. It touched down a few miles south-southwest of Auburn and traveled just under a mile before dissipating.

Additionally, storm survey teams identified damage from what they believe was an EF-2 tornado southwest of Yukon, near Page Airport. Another team reported similar damage outside Custer City. In Canadian County, up to 20 buildings suffered damage, whereas in Custer County, emergency officials reported damage to at least 10 homes.

The Storm Prediction Center reports that over 15 million people in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri are under an enhanced severe weather threat for Tuesday. The primary concerns are strong wind gusts and hail, though some areas may also face tornadoes with a strength of EF2 or higher. Cities like Milwaukee, Kansas City, Omaha, Madison, and Des Moines,are at risk. The likelihood of severe storms extends from Texas to Michigan, affecting cities such as Dallas, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit.

Due to expected heavy rainfall on Tuesday, flash flooding is also a concern for parts of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. Total rainfall could range from 1 to 3 inches, with some areas potentially receiving up to 5 inches. By Wednesday, the storm system is expected to weaken but will still be capable of producing thunderstorms from Texas to western New York, with milder threats of hail, winds, and potential tornadoes.
