Victoria Battles Ongoing Bushfires as Fires Scorch Over 400,000 Hectares
Fire crews across Victoria continue to battle multiple uncontrolled bushfires, with confirmed structural losses now surpassing 700 buildings, including nearly 228 homes either destroyed or damaged. The fires have already scorched approximately 404,000 hectares, an area more than five times the size of Singapore, underscoring the scale of the ongoing emergency.
As of the latest update, 11 fires remain active statewide. Authorities are taking advantage of slightly milder weather conditions to strengthen containment lines and carry out back-burning operations in an effort to slow the spread.
One of the most destructive fires continues to burn near Longwood in northern Victoria. Officials confirmed that the blaze has destroyed 142 homes and has spread across roughly 137,000 hectares, making it the largest active fire in the state. Another fire near Ravenswood South has resulted in the loss of 54 homes.
Meanwhile, Victoria’s second-largest fire is burning near Walwa in the state’s northeast, where it has already consumed more than 102,000 hectares. A separate fire within Mount Lawson State Park, close to Walwa, has also caused significant damage, destroying nine homes so far.
