Typhoon Kajiki Slams into Vietnam with Fierce Winds, Torrential Rains & Rising Flood Threats
A powerful Typhoon Kajiki made landfall in Vietnam on Monday, battering the country’s coastal provinces with fierce winds. Kajiki barrelled into Vietnam’s Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces at around 3 p.m. local time (4 a.m. ET) with wind speeds of 133 kph (82 mph).
Powerful gusts ripped through properties, uprooted trees from the ground, and knocked down lampposts, according to state media. More than 586,000 residents have been evacuated. The storm is expected to move inland towards Laos and Thailand. The Thai government warns that flash floods, runoffs, and landslides could hit parts of the country until Wednesday.
Typhoon Kajiki formed on August 23 over the northeastern South China Sea and rapidly intensified while moving westward, skirting just south of Hainan Island. In Sanya, it delivered winds near 162 km/h (about 100 mph) and dumped between 25 to 35 cm (10–14 in) of rain, prompting a red alert and evacuations of around 20,000 residents.
