Tropical Storm Sara Makes Landfall in Honduras and Poses Severe Weather Threat to Central America
Tropical Storm Sara made landfall in northern Honduras on Thursday, threatening to unleash torrential rains across parts of Central America and southern Mexico. As of early Friday morning, Sara had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, and further strengthening is possible in the coming days if the storm’s center remains largely offshore from Honduras’ northern coast.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that Sara made landfall about 105 miles west-northwest of Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Honduras-Nicaragua border. The storm was moving west at approximately 10 mph.
Tropical storm alerts have been issued for parts of Honduras through Friday. The NHC warned that the storm could bring “life-threatening” flooding and up to 30 inches of rainfall to parts of Honduras, with double-digit rainfall totals potentially impacting other areas of Central America. This could result in “widespread areas of life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flash flooding and mudslides.”
Sara is now expected to track further west over more of Central America and the Yucatán Peninsula, weakening as it loses access to the warm water it needs to survive.
