Tropical Storm Calvin Threatens Hawaii’s Big Island with Heavy Rain and Coastal Hazards: Assess the Impact
Tropical Storm Calvin is forecast to pass over or just south of Hawaii’s Big Island. The storm poses several threats, including dangerous coastal surf, heavy rain, and gusty winds. As the storm’s swift westward movement continues, Calvin is expected to maintain its status as a weak tropical storm. As of late Monday night, the storm was positioned approximately 570 miles east of Hilo, with sustained winds reaching 45 mph.
The primary concern lies in the heavy rainfall, leading to flood watches for several islands, including Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and the Big Island. The period of concern spans from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon. Along east-facing shorelines, the storm’s influence will also cause swells and rapid surf, starting on Tuesday and perhaps lasting through Wednesday.
The rainfall forecast anticipates approximately 4 to 8 inches along windward areas of the Big Island, and 1 to 4 inches across other parts of the state, continuing through Thursday.
