Torrential Rain Triggers Flooding in Maryland, Millions on Alert Across Mid-Atlantic

A flash flood emergency was declared Tuesday in northwestern Maryland after relentless rainfall inundated parts of Allegany County. The severe flooding forced the evacuation of two elementary schools, and submerged homes and businesses in downtown Westernport. By Tuesday afternoon, as much as 5 inches of rain had fallen across communities including Westernport, Luke, and Barton, with rainfall rates peaking at 1 to 2 inches per hour.

The National Weather Service placed over 15 million people in the Mid-Atlantic region under flood alerts from Tuesday through Wednesday. Flood watches remain active through Wednesday morning across areas of east-central North Carolina, east-central Virginia, eastern West Virginia, west-central Maryland, and central Pennsylvania as the threat of additional heavy rain continues.
