Severe Storms and Tornadoes Batter Chicago and Midwest

Powerful thunderstorms and tornadoes have been striking the Chicago area and wider Midwest region over the past 24 hours. On Monday, severe weather affected a wide area from the Midwest to the Northeast with dangerous thunderstorms, which produced multiple reported tornadoes. The National Weather Service in Chicago issued multiple tornado warnings as the storms moved through the region.

A “complex of destructive storms” had moved across eastern Iowa into northern Illinois on Monday night. Following the powerful storm system, damage reports began to mount. A tornado touched down near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport , prompting passengers to take shelter and disrupting hundreds of flights. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The Chicago area saw everything from downed trees to traffic accidents, to hundreds of thousands of homeowners now without power.

NWS  placed nearly 15 million people from Iowa to Michigan at a Level 4 out of 5 risk on its 5-point severe thunderstorm risk scale, including Chicago for dangerous storms capable of producing large hail, hurricane-force winds, and possible tornadoes.
