EF3 Tornado damages Pfizer facility and impacts Nash County in Northern Carolina: Actionable Insights on EigenPrism
On Wednesday afternoon, a tornado struck Nash County, North Carolina, causing severe damage to various structures, including a Pfizer plant. The tornado, classified as an EF-3 with estimated winds of 150 mph, originated west of Dortches and crossed Interstate 95, moving into an area north of Rocky Mount, which is approximately 45 miles northeast of Raleigh.
As a result of the storm, at least 13 people in Nash County were treated for minor injuries. In neighboring Edgecombe County, three people were injured. The Pfizer facility in Rocky Mount suffered severe damage, with the roof appearing crumpled like paper and debris scattered in the surrounding parking lot.
Additionally, the tornado caused trees to fall onto Interstate 95, leading to a temporary closure of the major highway in both directions for at least an hour before reopening, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The National Weather Service conducted surveys to assess the extent of the damage caused by the tornado and initially identified EF-2 damage in Dortches which was later announced to be EF-3 damage.
