Southern Texas Faces Rare High Flood Risk as Heavy Rain Continues
Parts of southern Texas are facing a rare high risk of flooding rain for a second straight day as slow-moving storms continue to bring life-threatening flood conditions.
The greatest concern is west of San Antonio, including areas near the U.S. 90 corridor, the southern Edwards Plateau, the Rio Grande Plains, and the western Hill Country. The Weather Prediction Center has placed this region under a Level 4 of 4 high risk for excessive rainfall, with some areas potentially seeing an additional 10 to 20 inches of rain through the end of the week.
The biggest risk is the speed and intensity of the rainfall. Storms could produce rain rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour, quickly overwhelming drainage systems and turning low-water crossings, creeks, streams, and flood-prone roads dangerous.
The flooding threat may remain serious through Friday, especially where storms repeatedly move over the same locations. Additional rainfall could worsen ongoing flooding, delay recovery, and increase impacts to homes, businesses, roads, and other exposed properties.
