Severe Winter Storm Prompts State of Emergency Across New York and New Jersey
A potent winter storm is targeting the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast just as the nation heads into the New Year, prompting widespread winter weather warnings from the National Weather Service of slick, icy roads and reduced visibility.
The Upper Midwest and Great Lakes may see over a foot of snow, accompanied by blizzard conditions, gusty winds, and dangerous whiteouts. In the Northeast, 4-6 inches of snow fell in New York City, with up to 10 inches in the Catskills, leading officials in New York and New Jersey to declare state of emergency and issue travel advisories. The storm has already caused major travel disruptions, with over 1,500 flights cancelled across the Great Lakes and Northeast during the weekend.
Forecasters warn that heavy rain falling on top of melting snow in parts of the Northeast, especially the New York Tri-State area could lead to flash flooding mid-week, possibly prompting flood watches in some counties as rainfall rates may rise rapidly.
