Severe Flood Threat Shifts South as Storm Batters Sydney and Newcastle
The intense weather system that triggered record-breaking floods in northern New South Wales has shifted southward, but authorities warn that the danger is far from over. Overnight, heavy rainfall began impacting Sydney and Newcastle, prompting the Bureau of Meteorology to issue additional alerts for the state’s southern regions.
The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) reported over 535 flood rescues within 24 hours, bringing the total to more than 670 since the flooding began. Over 150 flood warnings remain active, including 40 at the emergency level.
Flooding has closed over 100 schools and left thousands of homes and businesses without electricity. Taree, located on the Mid-North Coast, is among the areas hardest hit. Further rainfall will worsen conditions across already-inundated regions, particularly in NSW’s Hunter and Mid-North Coast areas.

May 22 | Severe Flash Flooding Grips New South Wales as Torrential Rains Continue
Severe flash flooding along Australia’s southeast coast has claimed two lives and left tens of thousands of residents stranded as rising waters isolated multiple communities. Authorities warned on Thursday that further heavy rainfall is likely within the next 24 hours.
As of Thursday morning, New South Wales (NSW) had issued 140 flood warnings, with around 50,000 people urged to prepare for potential evacuations. Some weather stations have already recorded up to 300 millimetres of rain in the past day, contributing to weekly rainfall totals of 500 to 600 millimetres in affected regions.
Flood alerts stretch from Grafton in the Northern Rivers region down to the Hunter Valley, with parts of southern Inverell and areas near Armidale also impacted. While rainfall is expected to ease in northern areas overnight, the threat will persist into Friday for southern regions, including the Southern Hunter, Blue Mountains, and Southern Highlands.
