Rapidly Growing Wildfire Prompts Evacuations in Oregon

A swiftly spreading wildfire near La Pine, Oregon has prompted evacuations and power outages in the area. The wind-driven Darlene 3 Fire, which began about one mile south of La Pine, has grown to nearly 2,415 acres (9.7 sq km) in size. Northerly winds of 17 mph and high temperatures averaging 84.2°F have fueled the fire’s quick spread. Governor Tina Kotek has invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act for Deschutes County in response to the blaze.

Fire crews have achieved 30% containment, but the winds threaten their progress. Over 1,100 homes and businesses have been evacuated due to the fire. Midstate Electric Cooperative has warned some customers of a potential public safety shutoff, and more than 2,000 customers are currently without power.

Southern Oregon is witnessing another wildfire- the Upper Applegate Wildfire. The Upper Applegate Fire in Oregon has grown to 896 acres, but containment has increased to 55%. Crews faced windy weather, moderated by overcast skies and higher humidity. The fire remains within containment lines and continues to burn at low to moderate intensity.
