Over 100 New York Families Asked to Evacuate as Jennings Creek Fire Burns Over 5,000 Acres

The Jennings Creek wildfire has been burning from Orange County to West Milford, New Jersey for over a week. Residents of more than 160 homes near Edgemere Avenue and Wah Ta Wah Park in Warwick were requested to voluntarily evacuate to a shelter at Greenwood Lake Middle School.

The Jennings Creek wildfire started on November 8 and has scorched over 5,000 acres across New York and New Jersey. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. As of Friday night, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reported that the fire was 88% contained. However, winds caused the fire to jump a containment line on Saturday evening, according to the DEC.

The department noted that the fire expanded by an additional 4 to 5 acres, but the flames have not reached the contingency line, and no structures are currently in danger. Containing the fire on Saturday required dropping nearly 22,000 gallons of water from helicopters overhead.
