Northeast Winter Storm Tests Resilience, Floods and Freezing Temperatures Cause Havoc
A powerful storm struck the Northeast United States, causing widespread havoc, destruction, and loss of life. This storm, marked by heavy rainfall and strong winds, brought 2 to 6 inches of rain to the region in just 24 hours. Consequently, this downpour led to hazardous flooding, particularly in New Jersey and Connecticut.
In Maine, the town of Farmington became isolated due to severe flooding. The temperatures plummeted, falling into the 30s and 40s, which worsened conditions for the 585,000 homes and businesses left without power. Following the storm, winter weather alerts were issued across ten states, including those in the Great Lakes region, the Appalachians, and the interior Northeast.
Almost 100 state roads were shut down due to flooding, and considerable damage to infrastructure in Maine. Over half of these closures occurred in four counties, with around thirty-six bridges statewide closed because of rapidly rising water levels.
In Northwestern New York, Ohio, central Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, up to a foot of snowfall was recorded, accompanied by wind gusts forecasted to reach 50 mph. Although the storm has moved into Canada, its effects will continue to be felt in New England on Tuesday, with ongoing flooding risks in areas where river levels are at their peak.
