Cyclone Maila Nears Queensland Coast with Early Week Landfall Risk
Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila briefly intensified to Category 5 strength over the Solomon Sea on Wednesday before weakening slightly to Category 4 as it continued tracking west. It is forecast to impact the Far North Queensland coast just weeks after the same area was affected by Tropical Cyclone Narelle. The cyclone is currently moving west between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Over the weekend, Maila is expected to move into the Coral Sea before making its final approach toward the Far North Queensland coast between Sunday and Monday, with a coastal crossing likely around Tuesday next week. The Bureau said there is an “increasingly likely” chance Maila will maintain tropical cyclone intensity into early next week, although the risk is expected to ease from high to moderate after it crosses the coast.

Apr 06 | North Queensland Faces Another Cyclone Risk as Tropical Cyclone Maila Approaches
Australians are preparing for another potential cyclone threat just weeks after Tropical Cyclone Narelle smashed towns in three states. A new system, Tropical Cyclone Maila, has developed in the Solomon Sea between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Maila is currently a Category 3 cyclone, with sustained winds near the centre of 130 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 185 kilometres per hour at 4:00 am AEST. The system is moving slowly at present, which is contributing to some uncertainty in its future track and timing.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the cyclone is expected to move gradually toward the Far North Queensland coast later this week, with a possible landfall over the weekend. As of Monday morning, the system was located roughly 590 km west of Honiara in the Solomon Islands. Forecast models indicate it may strengthen to around Category 4 intensity before weakening again to Category 3 in the following days.
While uncertainty remains as to its path, there is a risk Tropical Cyclone Maila could bear down on Far North Queensland, parts of which were struck by Narelle only weeks ago.
