Homes Destroyed as Multiple Bushfires Burn Across the state of New South Wales in Australia
The recent bushfires in NSW began due to a dangerous combination of extreme weather that included record-breaking heat, severe dryness, gusty winds, and lightning-prone thunderstorms. Multiple bushfires ignited over the weekend and quickly threatened vulnerable regions including the Central Coast, Bulahdelah on the Mid North Coast, and parts of the Upper Hunter near Milsons Gully.
As of Monday afternoon, 49 bushfires are still burning across the state, nine of which remain uncontained.
One of the worst-hit fires was at Koolewong, where 16 houses were destroyed after a fire started in a park early Saturday afternoon and quickly became devastating. It has burned through more than 129 hectares. While the fire has since been downgraded, it remains active in parts of the Koolewong Reserve, Woy Woy Bay Road, and Phegans Bay.
Further north, a fire at Bulahdelah has burnt through 3604 hectares since Thursday, resulting in the loss of four homes. Fire crews have managed to bring the blaze under control, but it continues to burn within Myall Lakes National Park, affecting both sides of the Pacific Highway between Crawford River and Nerong.
In the Upper Hunter region, the Milsons Gully fire remains active within the Goulburn River National Park, impacting the areas of Baerami, Baerami Creek, Widden, Yarrawa, and Kerrabee. This fire has already consumed over 11,825 hectares and is currently listed as being under control.
