MMI 8.8 Earthquake Rattles Russia and Triggers Tsunami Alerts Across US West Coast & Pacific Rim
A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s eastern coast early Tuesday, triggering 5-metre (16-foot) tsunami waves and tsunami warnings in multiple nations across the Pacific, prompting evacuations in Hawaii and alerts along the US West Coast.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 85 miles off the Kamchatka Peninsula, at a depth of nearly 12 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Within an hour, two significant aftershocks measuring 6.3 and 6.9 in magnitude rattled the same region. Dozens more aftershocks above 5 magnitude also struck Russia in the immediate hours after.
The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings and advisories for multiple Pacific nations, including Russia’s Far East, The governments of Chile, Peru and Ecuador also issued tsunami alerts. Meanwhile, the first tsunami waves have already reached the coasts of Russia, Japan, and Alaska, though only minimal damage has been reported so far.
