Miyazaki Coast in Japan Rocked by 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on Thursday, initially prompting a tsunami advisory for parts of Kyushu and Shikoku. The earthquake registered a lower 6 on the seven-point Japanese seismic intensity scale and occurred at a depth of 30 kilometers, with its epicenter in the Hyuganada Sea off Miyazaki Prefecture.

The United States Geological Survey reported that the first quake hit at 4:42 pm (local time) at a depth of 33 kilometers, approximately 29 kilometers southeast of Miyazaki on Kyushu. A second quake struck less than a minute later at a depth of 26 kilometers, about 20 kilometers northeast of Miyazaki.

A total of nine people were reported injured in Kyushu’s Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. In areas where tremors were strongly felt, the risk of building collapses and landslides increased. Small waves were recorded in some areas. All tsunami advisories were lifted at 10 p.m.
