Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Shakes Hawaii Island, Damages Homes

Residents across Hawaii Island continue cleanup efforts after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Friday night, damaging homes, shifting structures off their foundations, and shaking communities across the state. The earthquake occurred at 9:46 p.m. local time and was centered about 3.7 miles east-southeast of the Honaunau-Napoopoo area, west of Mauna Loa, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Several aftershocks have already been recorded in the area, including one measuring magnitude 4.0. Strong shaking was reported across the islands, but officials said there has been no apparent impact on Mauna Loa and Kīlauea, two of Hawaii Island’s active volcanoes. There were also reports of downed utility lines, power outages, and damage to homes and other structures.
