Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake in Java: Significant Fatalities and Property Damage

Indonesia’s West Java province experienced an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 on Monday, according to the USGS. The quake caused many fatalities and led to significant damage to infrastructure and property. 

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 75 Km (45 miles) southeast of Jakarta, with a shallow depth of 10 km. The National Disaster Agency reports that over 300 homes were damaged or destroyed, and approximately 700 residents were injured.  

The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
