M 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Greek Island of Crete, Causing Massive Damage to Property

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck Greek Island of Crete at 9:17 am (local time) on Monday. Reports of extensive damage to buildings and property. The earthquake’s epicentre was 14 miles northwest of the seaside village of Arvi in southeastern Crete. The depth of the quake was around 6 miles (10 kilometers).

The Athens Geodynamic Institute reported the magnitude of the earthquake to be 5.8. However, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) put the preliminary reading of magnitude 6.5.

As per the European Union data, the Greek Island of Crete has a population of more than 634,000 – making it the largest and most populous of all the Greek islands. One person has been confirmed dead and 9 severly injured from the strong quake, in the town of Arkalochori, south of the island’s capital, Heraklion.
