Japan Earthquake: M 5.9 Earthquake Shakes Northwestern Chiba Prefecture
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck Japan’s northwestern Chiba Prefecture, east of its capital Tokyo, on Thursday evening. The depth of the quake was around 38.5 miles (62 kilometers). There are reports of several minor injuries in the the Chiba Prefecture or surrounding areas. More than 250 households in Tokyo reported power outage after the earthquake struck. However, there did not appear to be any major impact from the tremor.
Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) first reported the magnitude of the earthquake to be 6.1, with an initial depth of 50 miles. The quake was comparatively stronger than the recent quakes in Tokyo, which much like rest of Japan – regularly experiences seismic activity.
As per the JMA, no tsumani warning is issued till now.
