M 5.4 Earthquake strikes China’s Sichuan Causing Widespread Damage to Property
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 in China’s southwestern province of Sichuan on Thursday. There have been reports of widespread damage of houses and buildings, roads covered in debris, and collapsed walls. More than 1221 houses have collapsed and around 3000 have been severely damaged. The quake left at least 3 people dead, and more than 60 people were injured.
The earthquake was about 32.3 miles (52 kilometres) southwest of the Yongchuan district of Chongqing, with a depth of around 6 miles, as per the USGS.
As per the reports, more serious earthquakes are unlikely, though there are chances of aftershocks.
