Tornadoes in Louisiana Damage Several Homes and Property
As per the National Weather Service (NWS), tornadoes swept through Louisiana and eastern Texas on Wednesday. The tornado’s maximum winds reached 130 mph, causing significant structural damage to many public and private properties in Lake Charles. Subsequently, more than 90,000 homes and businesses were out of power in Texas. The number includes areas around Harris County, Brazoria, Calhoun, Austin, Chambers and Orange. Louisiana reported approximately 20,000 outages, mostly near the Lake Charles area.
The NWS reports that the storms will continue to move across Louisiana and then into Mississippi and Florida Panhandle. More tornadoes and gusty winds can be expected.
The area around Lake Charles has faced back-to-back disasters in recent years. This includes major flash flooding in May and icy winter weather in February. In 2020, Hurricane Laura made landfall near Cameron Parish in Louisiana with sustained winds of 150 mph, as a Category 4 storm.
