Hurricane Rick Expected to Make Landfall Along the Coast of Mexico Today
According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Rick will be making a landfall along the coast of Mexico between Zihuantanejo and Lazao Cardenas today. Consequently, life-threatening storm surge, strong winds and heavy rains may spread onshore over portions of southern Mexico.
Currently, Rick is located about 20 miles west of Zihuantanejo Mexico and is moving northwards at 8mph. The storm is packing sustained winds of 105mph and is a Category 1 hurricane. The storm unleashed rain and wind on parts of Mexico’s Pacific coast late on Sunday.
After an eight-day dip in tropical activity in the Eastern Pacific, Tropical Depression 17-E formed roughly 500 miles SSE of Manzanillo, Mexico on Friday morning. After that, the swirling mass of showers and thunderstorms strengthened further into Tropical Storm Rick – becoming the 17th named storm and the 8th hurricane of the 2021 East Pacific Season.
As per the NHC, Hurricane Rick will pour rain across coast stretches of Guerrero and Michoacán states in Mexico till Tuesday. Rainfall in some places will amount to 20 inches, likely causing flooding and mudslides. However, the center reports that there is some uncertainty in the storm’s track forecast.
