Hurricane Julia Hits Nicaragua as Category 1 Hurricane
Hurricane Julia, a Category 1 Hurricane, made landfall in Nicaragua early on Sunday. With winds of 85 mph, the storm made landfall near Laguna de Perlas at 1:15 am ET in the morning.
Along with hurricane-force winds, Nicaragua is anticipated to see life-threatening rainfall of 6 to 10 inches, with isolated amounts as high as 15 inches.
Along San Andres and Providencia islands, storm surges of up to four feet over normal tidal levels are predicted. Large, destructive waves and storm surge of up to six feet are expected along Nicaragua’s coast.
The storm is anticipated to strike Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala today after passing over Nicaragua.
It is likely to dissipate after developing into a tropical depression by early morning Tuesday.
