Hurricane Gilma Approaches Hawaii

Approximately 1,260 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, Hurricane Gilma is expected to continue its west-northwestward path, picking up speed by Tuesday evening. 

On Monday evening, the storm was moving west with maximum sustained winds decreasing to approximately 100 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.  

This development follows Tropical Storm Hone, which passed south of the Big Island early Sunday as a Category 1 hurricane, bringing torrential rain with accumulations of up to 18 inches in some areas. 

As Gilma advances, it is expected to maintain a westerly trajectory, but its track has been shifting and may continue to do so throughout the week. Meanwhile, a third system named Hector reached tropical storm status on Sunday, forming about 1,000 miles west of Baja California, as reported by the National Hurricane Center.  

Hector, positioned east of Gilma, was producing sustained winds of up to 65 mph as it moved westward on Monday. Forecasters predict that Hector will gradually intensify over the next few days.
