Historic Flash Floods Devastate New Mexico’s Ruidoso, Leaving at Least Three Dead
Torrential monsoonal rains on Tuesday afternoon unleashed catastrophic flash flooding in the mountain village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, claiming the lives of at least three people. The deluge struck burn scar regions left by last year’s South Fork and Salt fires, where the barren land accelerated runoff and fueled sudden, dangerous water surges.
The floods come on the heels of catastrophic flash floods in Texas. The area was inundated with 3.5 inches of rain in about 90 minutes. Another round of rain is possible in the evening as well. If another downpour happens, flash flooding can begin rapidly just like Tuesday.
