Greece Wildfires 2023 Force Mass Evacuations in Rhodes, Corfu & Evia: Assess the Impact
Greece is facing its largest-ever wildfire evacuation. More than 20,000 people have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the crisis now affecting Greece, with Rhodes, Corfu, and Evia being the worst-affected places. The wildfires originated in Rhodes on July 19 and escalated rapidly, spreading sixfold between July 22 and July 26. There are more than 500 wildfires burning across Greece.
A vast stretch of Rhodes, from the center to the southern town of Kiotari, has been scarred by the flames. Greece’s wildfires have devastated an area approximately 2.5 times larger than average for this time of year. The flames have destroyed many homes and businesses, with many tourists forced to leave. As the authorities work to keep the flames in Greece under control and contained, the situation remains severe.
