France and Spain Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations as Fire Risk Continues
Wildfires in France and Spain have forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes as extreme heat, dry conditions, and strong winds continue to fuel fast-moving fires across parts of western Europe.
In southwest France, a major wildfire near Bordeaux in the Gironde region has burned around 42,000 hectares, or nearly 104,000 acres with at least 240 homes had been destroyed and many more damaged. The fire has forced large-scale evacuations, with the latest reports putting the number of evacuees in France at around 220,000. Authorities said the blaze had stopped growing for now, but it remains a threat as hotter conditions could allow flames to flare up again.
Spain is also dealing with several major fires. In central Spain, fires have affected areas west of Madrid, including parts of Madrid, Toledo, and Ávila provinces. The Ávila fire has become one of the largest wildfires in Spain’s recent history, burning around 500 sq km, or more than 50,000 hectares. Across Spain, nearly 100,000 people have been affected or evacuated as fires continue to burn in multiple regions.
