Flash Flooding Wreaks Havoc in Milwaukee as Rivers Surge and Roads Shut Down

Heavy thunderstorms and torrential rainfall battered parts of the Midwest and Plains over the weekend, unleashing dangerous flash flooding. The Milwaukee area was among the hardest hit, prompting numerous water rescues. According to the National Weather Service, four rivers in the Milwaukee metro region reached record-high levels during the deluge.

The flooding began late on August 9, 2025, when a series of intense thunderstorms delivered unprecedented rainfall across Milwaukee and nearby communities. A rain gauge in northwest Milwaukee measured 14.5 inches of rain in just 24 hours, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District reported.

Thousands of basements and ground-level floors were submerged, resulting in widespread property damage. Major roads became impassable, with stranded vehicles scattered across flooded streets. Flood Warnings remain in place for sections of multiple rivers and tributaries in the area. Later today, NWS says there is a 30–50% chance of additional scattered thunderstorms, particularly across the northwestern portion of the region.
