Durkee and Lone Rock Fires Rage in Oregon
The Lone Rock Fire in Oregon has burned approximately 134,752 acres and is only 40% contained as of July 25, 2024. The blaze has threatened numerous communities, including Spray, Lonerock, Hardman, and Winlock, leading to mandatory evacuations. Homes have been lost, although a complete damage assessment is pending as firefighters continue to battle the flames and protect structures in the fire’s path.
The Durkee Fire, ignited by a lightning strike, has rapidly escalated to nearly 240,000 acres (97,124 hectares), making it the largest wildfire in the country for firefighters to contain so far. The fire has generated its own weather phenomena, including a ‘pyrocumulus cloud’ that allows smoke and ash to rise much higher into the atmosphere than would normally be possible.
Heavy winds and dry brush are fueling the Durkee Fire’s rapid spread, which has forced evacuations around Durkee, Oregon and the temporary shutdown of Interstate 84. So far, no structures have been reported destroyed
