Tropical Cyclone Freddy Batters Madagascar Causing Destructive Storm Surge: Impact Footprints Available
Tropical Cyclone Freddy made landfall in Madagascar on Tuesday with a wind speed of 81 mph. The storm tore off roofs from homes and caused a storm surge as it passed through Madagascar’s east coast. Schools have been closed and transport is suspended.
On Monday, the cyclone crossed 75 miles northwest of Mauritius, pushing 500 people into shelters and causing more than 500 power outages. It has already damaged hotels along the Mauritius shoreline.
Cyclone Freddy hit Madagascar just one month after Cyclone Cheneso made landfall. This intense storm also caused flooding and led to the eviction of tens of thousands of people from their homes.
Freddy is predicted to travel from Madagascar across the ocean and make landfall in Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
