Cyclone Chido Leaves Mayotte in Ruins, Moves on to Mozambique
Cyclone Chido, a powerful Category 4 storm, struck Mayotte on Saturday with winds exceeding 220 kilometers per hour (136 miles per hour), causing widespread devastation. Mayotte is one of the overseas departments of France as well as one of the 18 regions of France. Entire neighborhoods were flattened, electrical grids destroyed, and hospitals and schools severely damaged in what is being described as the strongest cyclone to hit Mayotte in over 90 years. The official death toll stands at 11, but authorities fear the number could rise to hundreds or even thousands, particularly in informal settlements housing undocumented migrants.
After battering Mayotte, the cyclone continued into northern Mozambique, causing further destruction before weakening. Rescue efforts in both regions have been hampered by damaged roads and disrupted communication networks. France has sent emergency aid to Mayotte, while Mozambique braces for recovery.
