Chile Fires Have Burned 800 Properties and 270,000 Hectares of Land: Assess the Impact
In Chile, hundreds of wildfires have burned 800 properties as the government declared a state of emergency in the southern regions of Araucania, Nuble, and Biobio. There are still 260 active wildfires in the drought struck region. On Friday, the state agency reported that 148 fires had been put out and firefighters were battling dozens of others in an effort to gain control. The fires had scorched 270,000 hectares by Sunday.
To understand the scale of the loss, the amount of forest and woodland that Chile normally loses each year has been burned in twenty-eight of these recent fires, according to Tohá. In several of the afflicted districts of Chile, the minister also mentioned record-breaking high temperatures.
The three inhabited districts of Araucana, Biobo, and Nuble have substantial stretches of forested land and several farms for growing grapes, apples, and berries.
