Deadly Afghanistan Earthquake Causes Major Damage to Property

On Wednesday around 1:30 am (21:00 GMT Tuesday), a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck easter Afghanistan, at a depth of 51 kilometers.

According to the Meteorological Department of neighboring Pakistan, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Paktika province, roughly 50 kilometers southwest to the city of Khost. It was the deadliest earthquake to hit Afghanistan in 20 years.

More than 3000 homes were destroyed, which also significantly damaged public property. The earthquake has killed at least 1000 people and wounded 1500 more.
