5.5 Magnitude Earthquake in Peru Kills at Least Six, Damages Buildings in Andes Region

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Peru’s Andes region late Saturday, killing at least six people, injuring more than 30, and displacing about 300 residents.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at 9:24 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located about 2 km west-southwest of Sicaya in Huancayo province. The quake was shallow, at a depth of around 10 km, which likely contributed to stronger shaking near the epicenter.

Several buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage, including a local church and former convent. Some of the worst impacts were reported in Chongos Bajo, an agricultural community where residents gathered outside damaged homes as emergency assessments continued.

Authorities are still reviewing the full extent of the damage, but early reports point to localized structural losses, temporary displacement, and continued safety concerns around weakened buildings.
