5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes New Zealand’s South Island

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Te Anau on New Zealand’s South Island at a depth of around 51 km and was felt widely across Fiordland, Southland, Otago, and nearby areas, including Queenstown and Milford Sound. Light shaking was widely reported across the Southland region, including Queenstown and Milford Sound. There are no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage.

The quake was initially measured at 6.3 magnitude but was later revised to 5.9. The National Emergency Management Agency issued a Tsunami warning from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point, but it has now been downgraded.  Although the warning was later downgraded, officials said coastal areas could still see strong and unusual currents, unpredictable surges, and unsafe conditions near the shore.
