Super Typhoon Bavi Strikes Northern Mariana Islands with Destructive Category 5 Winds
Super Typhoon Bavi made landfall on Monday over Rota, a small island in the US territory of the Northern Mariana Islands near Guam, bringing destructive winds and heavy rain to parts of the western Pacific.
The storm was the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane as its center moved over Rota, home to around 2,000 people. The National Weather Service reported maximum sustained winds of more than 180 mph, with winds on Rota expected to exceed 150 mph near the core of the storm.
Saipan International Airport recorded wind gusts of more than 100 mph as the typhoon moved through the region. Typhoon and flash flood warnings were in effect for Rota, Guam, Tinian, and Saipan, while nearby islands were under tropical storm warnings or watches.
Bavi is expected to move away from the Marianas by Monday afternoon while tracking generally west at around 10 to 13 mph. The storm is likely to continue bringing dangerous winds, heavy rainfall, and flooding risks before conditions gradually improve across the islands.
