Powerful 7.5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern Venezuela, Strongest in Over a Century
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck northern Venezuela on the evening of Wednesday, June 24, 2026, just 39 seconds after a magnitude 7.2 foreshock, an “earthquake doublet” that collapsed buildings across Caracas. It was the strongest quake to hit Venezuela in more than a century; the only larger regional event on USGS record is the M7.7 Caracas earthquake of 1900. Authorities have so far reported 3,811 deaths and 16,740 people injured as of July 09, 2026.
Per the USGS, the epicenter sat near Morón in northwestern Venezuela, about 100 to 168 km west of Caracas, at a shallow depth of roughly 13 km. A strong, shallow quake striking so close to dense urban centers points to significant property losses, compounded by the region’s older, largely unreinforced masonry building stock.
Damage is concentrated in Caracas, where the Altamira and Los Palos Grandes districts were hardest hit, including the collapse of a 22-story tower, with further structural damage across Falcón, Trujillo, Carabobo, Aragua, Miranda and La Guaira. Simón Bolívar International Airport was damaged and closed, and parts of the capital lost power and communications. Tsunami advisories for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands were issued and later cancelled.
