6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Cuba, the strongest in 150 Years

A powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck in the southern Gulf of Mexico just west of Cuba on Monday, triggering widespread tremors that were felt as far away as southwestern Florida. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located approximately 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba.

The USGS reported intense shaking that lasted for roughly 20 seconds across Havana and Pinar del Río in Cuba, prompting residents to evacuate immediately. Shaking was also felt along the Yucatán Peninsula, particularly in major tourist hubs including Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. The quake was relatively shallow, occurring at a depth of 10 to 26 kilometers, but the National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that there is no danger of a tsunami.

The earthquake has been identified as the strongest earthquake to strike the region in at least 150 years. The last comparable seismic event in the area was a magnitude 6.0 earthquake near San Cristóbal in 1880.
