Powerful 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes the Southern Philippines
A massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines early Monday at 7:37 a.m. local time, prompting immediate tsunami warnings across the western Pacific region. The powerful quake killed at least four people, caused several buildings to collapse, severely damaged at least two dozen more, and damaged a major access bridge in General Santos City. Widespread blackouts were also reported across the affected provinces. Since the earthquake struck off the southern Philippines coast, officials have recorded 138 aftershocks.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the epicenter was located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of General Santos City, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the magnitude at 7.8 with a deeper estimate of 55.2 kilometers.
The initial shockwave prompted immediate tsunami warnings across several neighboring countries, including Indonesia and Japan. Fortunately, most of those alerts have since been lifted. The USGS reported that minor tsunami waves were recorded across the region, ranging from a few centimeters in Palau and Indonesia to nearly three feet (0.8 meters) along the coast of Davao in the Philippines, where water briefly washed ashore.
