Multiple Tornadoes Tore Through Mississippi, Damaging Hundreds of Homes

Several tornadoes spawned by supercell thunderstorms tore through central, western and southern Mississippi on Wednesday evening, with at least 14 tornadoes reported and a tornado emergency issued. The storms damaged roughly 400 homes, injured at least 17 people, downed trees and knocked out power lines in multiple counties.

Lincoln and Lamar counties sustained the heaviest damage. In Lamar County, about 275 homes were damaged; Lincoln County reported more than 200.

The storms also produced large hail across the region, including reports of hail up to 2.75 inches in diameter in Waugh, Alabama, and Tucker, Mississippi. The weather service said additional storms were expected Thursday, with the possibility of tornadoes in parts of Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Strong storms were also possible in parts of the Carolinas and Texas.
